WIRRIMBIRRA Sanctuary is appealing to the community for the return of its prized central bearded dragons Wal and Dilly .

The two lizards became community favourites in March 2011, when the Macarthur Chronicle hosted a competition to name the reptiles when they arrived at the Bargo sanctuary.

Last week thieves broke into the sanctuary, on Remembrance Driveway, and stole Wal and Dilly.

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary fauna manager Jenny Birnie said the facility's team and the community were devastated.

``The school kids come here especially to see Wal and Dilly  it's a real pity,'' she said. ``The kids actually get to hold these ones  we would love to have them returned.
``It's very disappointing.''

Det-Sgt Daniel Clements , of Camden police, confirmed the bearded dragons were stolen some time between 5.15pm on Sunday, August 5, and Tuesday morning, August 7.

``I can confirm a break and enter happened at the location,'' he said.

``Some mesh was cut on top of a glass tank located near the main office and two central bearded dragons were stolen and also a cage.''

Ms Bernie urged the people responsible to ensure the bearded dragons were looked after.
``Right now they need to be kept warm,'' she said.

``It's most probably the worst time in the world to take the lizards, because if they get cold, they are going to die.''
